Obama In Wonderland

Barack Obama has another grand idea...and this one's even wilder than his fantasy about invading Pakistan with a couple of brigades. The latest from Barack Hussein Obama is all about how is all about how he would `engage' Iran and engage in diplomacy when he's president:

In an hour-long interview on Wednesday, Obama made clear that forging a new relationship with Iran would be a major element of a broad effort to stabilize Iraq. And he vowed to engage in "aggressive personal diplomacy" with Iran and other regional powers as he withdrew American combat forces in Iraq.

Obama said that Iran had been "acting irresponsibly" by supporting Shiite militant groups in Iraq. He also stressed that Tehran's suspected nuclear weapons program and its support for "terrorist activities" were serious concerns and that "we expect them to desist from those actions."

But Obama said that "changes in behavior" by Iran should be met with gestures by the United States, beginning with possible membership in the World Trade Organization.

"We are willing to talk about certain assurances in the context of them showing some good faith," he said. "I think it is important for us to send a signal that we are not hell bent on regime change, just for the sake of regime change, but expect changes in behavior. And there are both carrots and there are sticks available to them for those changes in behavior."

Now there's some re-eal clear thinking for you.

Someone ought to clue Obama into the fact that this is exactly what the Bush Administration has been piddling around with for the last four and a half years since Iran's illegal clandestine nuclear program was discovered...not by Inspector Clouseau Mohammed El Baradi and the IAEA,incidentally, but by Iranian dissidents who outed the regime's scheme.

Any other nation caught violating an international treaty like this would have been hit with heavy sanctions. Instead, the mullahs received offers of all kinds of economic incentives from the west for this, stalled for months and finally said, unequivocally..NO SALE. And they continue to repeat it at every opportunity.

They've also refused to quit meddling in Iraq, or shipping arms to the jihadis there, or violating UN Resolution 1701 by rearming Hezbollah. And that certainly isn't a surprise, since Iran has regarded itself at war with the Great Satan ever since 1979.

And anyway, why should Iran negotiate? They've been able to operate exactly as they please without a serious consequences except a rhetorical flourish here and there, followed by more `negotiations'.

So what's to negotiate, anyway? What kind of bribe would a President Obama plan on offering them? Maybe offer to end US support of Israel? And exactly what guarantees are there that the mullahs would keep their end of the deal, especially considering how Iran has kept international agreements in the past?

Obama is also being flagrantly dishonest when he talks about `using sticks'...since he has yet to denounce or comment on a letter sent by 30 Democrat Senators (including presidential candidates Clinton and Dodd) warning President Bush that 'he has no authority to attack Iran'.

Aside from the fact that constitutionally, President Bush has every right to order a strike on Iran, one would think that this sort outrageous aid and comfort to our enemies and an attempt to weaken a sitting president in war time might just call for a few words from someone who hopes to be commander in chief himself some day.

It gets better. Obama also decided to weigh in on the war in Iraq, in an effort to ingratiate himself with the Angry Left at Senator Clinton's expense.

While Senator Clinton has a least a small grip on reality and wants to leave an undefined `residual force' in Iraq after pulling out most of the troops in order to fight Al Qaeda and continue to train the Iraqi Army, Obama goes her one better by wanting to withdraw all of our troops from Iraq, except for a small `counter-terrorism force' - based outside the country!

And while he might allow American training personnel to stay in Iraq, Senator Lite-Weight is a little hazy on whether his `counter terrorism force' could actually do it's job based away from where the terrorists are, or protect those American training personnel still in Iraq!

Not only that, but this genius said in the interview that American and allied troops should be prepared to return to Iraq AFTER we leave to protect civilians if there was genocidal attacks against civilians.

I'll repeat that, just in case anyone missed something. We go to the expense and trouble of leaving, closing down all our facilities and making our army retreat from a fight it's winning...and then go back on President Obama's say so and do it all over again.

Senator Barack Obama is that most dangerous of political animals..an empty suit with charisma.
