Fred Phelps' Westboro Ghouls Get Some Well Deserved Payback

Many of you are familiar with the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, who make a fetish out of disrupting military funerals and traumatizing the assembled loved ones of our deceased warriors with 'protests' based on the idea that America is cursed by G-d because it allows homosexuality.

Leave it to the good people of McAlester, Oklahoma to remind these people that trashing the funeral of one of the brave men who died to assure them their First Amendment rights carries a certain cost.

After some of the Westboro ghouls arrived to disrupt the funeral of of Army Sgt. James McCluskley of McAlester, they were greeted with a massive crowd of about 1,000 counterprotesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held. Not only did the crowd drown them out, but a couple of Rolling Thunder-style bikers revved their Harleys at strategic locations to make sure not a single foul word of the Westboro-bots' screed could be heard.

Ah, but the day was young.

When the Westboro-bots returned to their mini-van, they found a few tires slashed. And as the van hobbled through town with a police escort, they were unable to find anyone willing to repair their tires for them. They eventually had to call Triple AAA for a flatbed trailer to get out of town.

The American spirit is still alive and well. And I'm certain Sgt. McCluskey is smiling somewhere.

I saw this reported on the news. There are organizations that exist now in the country to counter protest those disturbed individuals.

I hope the father of the serviceman who sued these bastards has a good day in the Supreme Court, but I am not holding my breath. We will know about that soon too.

Before protesting at the military funeral, the WBCers held their first-ever protest outside a Woodbridge, VA, high school (disclosure: my niece attends this school), where they were also met by counter-protesters. I'm guessing they have started targeting schools because they try to provoke reactions over which they can sue, and parents and communities feel very strongly about their kids.
